Your job as leader is to relentlessly pursue the excellence within each of your employees through horizontal and vertical development.Horizontal development involves adding and enhancing knowledge, skills, and competencies. It’s about transfer of information, therefore what your people know.
Vertical development on the other hand is the advancement of your people’s thinking capability – deliberately developing people to think in more complex, systemic, strategic and independent ways. It is about expanding how your people think about what they are thinking about.
